About this tool
The SHA256 Generator produces the SHA-256 digest of a string using the browser's Web Crypto API, so the computation is native, fast and private. The 64-character hex result can be copied in lower or upper case and is identical to sha256sum, OpenSSL and every language's standard library.
Need SHA-1, SHA-384 or SHA-512 as well? Use the SHA Hash Generator.

Frequently asked questions
Where is SHA-256 used?
TLS certificates, code signing, Bitcoin, file integrity checks and HMACs. It is the default general-purpose hash today.
SHA-256 for passwords?
Only with a salt and a slow KDF such as PBKDF2, bcrypt or Argon2; a plain SHA-256 of a password is fast to brute-force.
Is the hash identical to the command-line tools?
Yes. The input is encoded as UTF-8 and the digest matches md5sum, sha256sum, OpenSSL and PHP's hash() byte for byte, including for Unicode text.
Does a trailing newline or space change the hash?
Yes, any change produces a completely different digest. Check for invisible whitespace when values do not match.
Are my files or data uploaded?
No. The tool is plain JavaScript that runs in your browser; the files or data you provide here are never uploaded to our servers.
