About this tool
The Binary Translator is the classic text-to-binary converter done properly: text is encoded as UTF-8 bytes and each byte is shown as an 8-bit group, so any language and even emoji round-trip exactly. In the other direction it accepts groups with or without spaces, validates the length and decodes the bytes back to text, all in your browser.

Frequently asked questions
How is text turned into binary?
Every character is encoded as UTF-8 and each byte is written as eight binary digits: H is 72, which is 01001000. Accented letters and emoji use two to four bytes.
My binary has no spaces
Fine: when the groups are not separated the digits are read as one stream and split every 8 bits; the total must be a multiple of 8.
Why does decoding give strange characters?
The bytes are not valid UTF-8 text, for example binary of a file rather than of text. The tool then falls back to Latin-1 so you still see something.
Are my files or data uploaded?
No. The tool is plain JavaScript that runs in your browser; the files or data you provide here are never uploaded to our servers.
