File Checksum

Select a file to compute its MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes locally, with progress and copy actions.

About this tool

Checksums confirm that a file is exactly what it should be: the installer you downloaded matches the publisher's hash, two copies of a sample are identical, or a suspicious binary can be looked up in VirusTotal without uploading it. The File Checksum tool computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 of a local file in your browser with a progress bar, lets you copy each value, and links the SHA-256 to VirusTotal.

For text instead of files use the SHA-256 Generator or MD5 Generator.

How to use it — quick steps

  1. 01

    Add the file

Drop it on the dashed area or choose it; installers, archives and malware samples up to 250 MB are fine.

  2. 02

    Wait for the hashes

The file is read once and hashed with all five algorithms; the bar shows progress on large files.

  3. 03

    Copy or look up

Copy the hashes or the whole report, or open the SHA-256 on VirusTotal to see what is known about the file.

Key features of this tool

  • Five algorithms at once

MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512, computed with the native Web Crypto API where available.

  • Built for verification

Compare the SHA-256 with the one on a download page, and jump straight to VirusTotal to check a suspicious file by hash.

  • Nothing leaves your device

The file is read with the File API and hashed in memory; it is never uploaded, which matters for malware samples.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my hash not match the one on the download page?

The file was modified, corrupted or truncated during download, or the page lists a hash for a different version. Download again and compare; a mismatch on a security tool should be treated as a red flag.

Which hash should I use?

SHA-256 for anything that matters; MD5 and SHA-1 are collision-prone but still widely used to identify files and look them up in threat intelligence databases.

Can I hash very large files?

Up to 250 MB here, which covers installers and most malware samples. Larger files would exhaust browser memory.

Are my files or data uploaded?

No. The tool is plain JavaScript that runs in your browser; the files or data you provide here are never uploaded to our servers.
